Position Summary

The Parks and Recreation Coordinator performs professional and administrative work in planning, organizing, implementing, promoting, and evaluating the Town’s Parks & Recreation programs, community events, and recreational facilities.

The coordinator is responsible for developing and administering recreation opportunities for residents of all ages; coordinating the use of Town parks and recreation facilities; maintaining program records; preparing reports; promoting programs through various communication platforms; developing partnerships with community organizations and local businesses; and assisting with the maintenance, appearance, and improvement of municipal parks and recreation areas.

This position is classified as per diem and is scheduled to work up to twenty (20) hours per week. Work hours may vary depending on seasonal programming, community events, and operational needs. Evening, weekend, and holiday work is expected as necessary.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Town Clerk and the Town Manager.

This has an hourly wage up to $17/hr. dependent on experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Parks and Recreation Coordinator shall:

  • Plan, organize, implement, supervise, and evaluate a variety of recreational programs, leagues, special events, educational activities, and community initiatives.
  • Coordinate the scheduling and use of Town parks, recreation facilities, playgrounds, athletic fields, and other municipal properties used for recreational purposes.
  • Oversee and monitor the maintenance, cleanliness, appearance, and improvement of Town parks, playgrounds, recreation facilities, trails, and related municipal properties.
  • Assist in developing short- and long-term goals for parks, recreation programs, and community engagement.
  • Assist in the preparation and administration of departmental budgets and monitor program expenditures.
  • Purchase or requisition supplies, equipment, materials, and services necessary for program operations.
  • Maintain inventories of recreation equipment and recommend replacement or capital improvements when appropriate.
  • Recruit, coordinate, train, and provide guidance to volunteers, coaches, instructors, and affiliated organizations regarding Town policies, safety procedures, and program expectations.
  • Promote Town Parks & Recreation programs, and community events through social media, the Town website, newsletters, press releases, public presentations, and other appropriate communication methods.
  • Maintain and manage all Parks and Recreation social media platforms and website content.
  • Develop partnerships with local businesses, schools, civic organizations, nonprofits, and volunteers to expand community recreation opportunities.
  • Coordinate employee wellness initiatives and other community-based health and wellness programs.
  • Evaluate community recreation needs and recommend improvements, additions, modifications, or reductions to programs, services, and facilities.
  • Prepare statistical data, inventories, and other reports requested by the Town Manager and/or the Town Clerk.
  • Ensure programs are conducted in a safe manner and comply with applicable Town policies and safety standards.
  • Attend meetings of the Select Board, committees, and other organizations as requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate should possess:

  • Knowledge of recreation facilities, athletic fields, playgrounds, and recreational equipment.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of recreational activities for youth, adults, seniors, and families.
  • Working knowledge of first aid practices, risk management, and safety procedures applicable to recreation programs.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to organize multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, employees, committee members, volunteers, community organizations, program participants, contractors, and the general public.
  • Ability to manage social media platforms, website content, and electronic communications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in parks and recreation, community programming, event planning, public administration, education, nonprofit management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.
  • Valid Maine Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one.
  • Ability to pass any required background checks applicable to youth programming.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Frequently walk, stand, bend, reach, climb, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Set up and take down tables, tents, athletic equipment, signs, and other event materials.
  • Operate standard office equipment and basic maintenance equipment.
  • Travel between Town facilities, parks, and event locations.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by recreation programs and community events.

  • Youth and family recreation activities
  • Employee wellness programs
  • Community contests and business partnerships
  • Additional recreational, educational, cultural, and community events as assigned.
